Effects of illiteracy – Educational Story
Ijenu wanted his favourite child, Chidi to study the same course he read in the University, so that he can take over from him when he grew old and returned to his ancestors. He knew that Chidi was industrious and he can manage the company properly than his brothers, Uzochukwu and Samuel.
Mr. Ijenu, being an educated man always warned his children on the 4 effects of illiteracy, he always encouraged them to go to school and study hard because is the key to success.
Despite his warnings, his other two sons, Uzochukwu and Samuel refused to go to school, instead they decided to continue with their street lives. Ijenu didn’t know that Uzochukwu and Emelie knew his plan to hand over the company to Chidi and that was one of the reasons that made them dislike Chidi so much.
The Plot
Truly, Uzochukwu and Samuel tried diabolically to make the brilliant boy, Chidi disappear from the planet earth. Sometimes the muttering of Uzochukwu and Samuel caused their father headache. Nobody could depict their problem. Therefore, Ijenu was contemplating either to share his properties among his children in his youthful age. The man was lost in thought.
Having understood the lifestyle of the stubborn boys, Uzochukwu and Samuel, she tried to influence them by providing whatever they demanded from her. Ada showed the boys parental love, still Uzochukwu and Co didn’t turn a new leaf.
Ijenu walked to the sitting room and called his wife with soft tone. Ada, his wife answered him quickly and went to meet him. Both of them sat down on the chair in the sitting room discussing heartily.

The man told his wife that he wanted to write his will and share the properties among his children. He pause for moments and then proceeded. Ndupu narrated to his wife the dream he had about Chidi. Ada stared at her husband and burst into laughter. She looked at him the second time and said; Joseph the dreamer”. What happened to Chidi in your dream?” she inquired.
Ijenu shook his head severally. He explained to his wife that Chidi was taken in the dream. Ada stood up from the chair where she was sitting and rebuked immediately. She stood akimbo while thinking seriously.
Papa Chidi narrated to her how he saw Chidi with Samuel in the dream pursuing Chidi with a Stick. He said it was Samuel that tickled Chidi on the head and he fell flat on the ground. Fear engulfed Ijenu. He woke up grabbing the air thinking that it was in a real life.
Mama Chidi’s Advice
Ada sighed and glanced at the roof. She told her husband that nothing would happen to their son, Chidi and she claimed that it was a mere dream. Ndupu concurred with her.
Mama Chidi discouraged her husband from sharing his properties among his children. Her claims were that it was too sudden and early. She urged him to give them basic education. Ada also encouraged her husband to erase the idea from his mind that their sons would inherit the properties at the right time.
The Advice
The following day, Ada called Uzo and Sam for a peaceful meeting. She tried to talk sense into them by educating them on the effects of illiteracy but the two boys laughed at their mother and walked out on her.
Two weeks to the examination period, Chidi woke up one morning with a symptom of fever. He felt very weak and his eyeball was reddish. His breathing was abnormal. When his room mates saw his condition, fear gripped them. Henry his friend was the only person with strong heart that picked courage and went closer to him. He touched his body as he stepped forward.

Oh! Henry lamented that Chidi’s body was very hot. While other students stood at distance looking at them. Henry invited them for prayers. After they had prayed for reasonable amount of time, one of the students suggested that the hostel master should be informed.
Shortly, Henry ran fast to call the teacher. Moments after, he arrived with him. The master took Chidi to the management. They hastily gave him first aid treatment. Thereafter the principal of the school invited Chidi’s Parents through telephone call.
Chidi’s Mother Intervened
Few hours later, Chidi’s mother stormed the school. The principal explained to her stormed the what happened. Ada thanked them. Then she immediately took her child to the nearby hospital.
When they got to the hospital the lab technician took Chidi’s specimen and went into the laboratory. Few minutes after, the man came out with positive result, which proved that Chidi was suffering stress. The lab technician assured Chidi’s mother that he would introduce her to a doctor that can treat her child.

However, the woman thanked him and waited patiently to be introduced to the doctor. Shortly, they were taken to the doctor’s office. The medical doctor hastily checked on him and placed Chidi on treatment. The nurses dripped him and treated him according to the doctor’s prescription.
6 Years later on, when Ijenu had passed away, it was time for his lawyer to read out his will to the family. By then, Uzo and Sam had repented of their bad ways but they couldn’t get anything doing because they were illiterates.
Mr. Nweke, Ijenu’s lawyer, visited his family on a monday morning and read out their late father’s will to them. Chidi being the only educated child inherited everything his father left because according to the will, Mr. Ijenu stated that his properties must be given to the educated child who is capable and intelligent enough to keep his business moving.
Moral Lessons
If Uzo and Samuel had listened to their parents, they would have been educated and working in their respective companies.
Never underestimate the power of education. Illiteracy makes you feel rejected among your mates, illiteracy can also take away your self esteem
Sam and Uzo regretted not going to school when they had the opportunity, ‘Oh! Now i understand the 4 effects of illiteracy papa warned us about’ Samuel lamented. ‘Truly, education is the key to success’ Uzochukwu added.
