Concerned about a possible assault on Peter Obi, a former presidential contender in Nigeria, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a statement expressing concern that this development could pose a danger to democratic freedoms and the ability to participate in politics in the country.
The ADC spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, expressed concern over the situation involving Obi and other party officials in a message posted on his official X page. Abdullahi added that this was especially concerning given the alleged prior warnings given to the former candidate.
He described the assault on Mr. Peter Obi and other ADC leaders as “a grave and disturbing development” that occurred today.
Additionally, Abdullahi connected the episode to earlier threats supposedly made against Obi, saying,
“An assassination plot was part of the Governor’s threat, which we were unaware of at the time.”
As damaging to democratic principles, the ADC spokesman denounced the use of violence and intimidation in political activity.
“Staining our democracy and mustering condemnation from all who believe in freedom, violence and intimidation are weapons of those who fear the will of the people,” he declared.
In addition, he emphasised that the party’s dedication to political engagement will not be shaken by the event.
Neither will the ADC budge or retreat. “We will remain resolute, speak our minds without fear, and carry on the nonviolent fight for a Nigeria free of repression and oppression,” Abdullahi declared.
