The City Boy Movement, an organization that supports President Bola Tinubu, addressed the theft of palliative items at a Saturday sensitisation event in Owerri, Imo State.
At the location of the five South-East states’ rally, the goods that were to be distributed were on display. These goods included food, phones, sewing machines, grinders, and more.
Unfortunately, chaos ensued not long after the distribution exercise began as people rushed forward in a stampede to get the items.
Many have pointed the finger at the widespread famine that occurred while Bola Tinubu was president—the guy whose name the movement was using to solicit donations—as the cause of the action.
The billionaire Chief Obinna Iyiegbu, also known as Obi Cubana, heads the City Boy Movement, which has denied the allegations and hinted that the looters may have been involved in a scheme to derail the distribution.
“While the disruption was regrettable, it should not overshadow the positive intentions and efforts behind the program, which was designed to support and empower young people, market traders, and some vulnerable people across the South-East,” said Chief Uche Nworah, the spokesperson for the movement in the region’s southeast.
On Saturday, March 14, 2026, at Heroes Square in the lovely city of Owerri, Imo State, the Renewed Hope National Tour and the City Boy Movement South-East Youth Tour and Empowerment Programme formally began. Since then, everything has been going swimmingly.
Shuttle buses, sewing machines, deep freezers, grinding machines, barbing kits, wheelchairs for people with disabilities, smartphones for content creators, generator sets, laptops, cash grants, farming kits and fertilisers, hair salon equipment, etc. were among the empowerment items given to beneficiaries from the five southeast states: Abia, Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, and Enugu.
But things took a turn for the worst when a group of unknown people rushed the venue and started stealing supplies for the empowerment event. A rush tragically ensued as a consequence of the unanticipated disturbance that caused the audience to panic.
I saw everything that happened because I was there. That some people are trying to cast the incident in a negative light is, therefore, quite sad.
