Etomi maltreated Adesuwa because she was not her real daughter, Etomi married Michael because he needed someone to take care of his daughter, Adesuwa after his first wife had passed away. Etomi never knew the wages of sin as she maltreated her step daughter.

The Wages Of Sin

One day while Adesuwa and Adelola prepared for school, they fought in the bathroom like they had never done before.

Normally, who ever reached for the soap first would use it to bath before the other person. So while they rushed for it that morning, Adesuwa got it first but Adelola claimed she touched it before her.

I took it first!” Adelola shouted. “How can you say you took it first when the soap is in my hand,” Adesuwa retorted.

They struggled for the soap and Adelola laughed at Adesuwa. Adesuwa got annoyed and pushed her back, they played until Etomi came and separated them. “Why are you playing?” Etomi asked them.

Adesuwa and Adelola

“Mummy, I finished brushing my teeth first but she refused to allow me use the soap before her,” Adelola lied. “Mummy it’s a lie!” Adesuwa tried to defend herself but Etomi shut her up.

“Shut up! Funny girl! Any other day you fight my daughter again, I will teach you a lesson of your life! Give me that soap! Like mother like daughter,” she chuckled scornfully.

Adesuwa gave her the soap amidst tears but she really did not understand what Etomi meant by ‘like mother like daughter’ She had always thought that Etomi was her mother. They went back to the bathroom and Adelola used the soap first. Michael overheard their voice and asked Etomi what the problem was.

Michael Intervened

“Don’t mind that funny girl, Adesuwa; just because she is older than Adelola, she oppresses her,” Etomi lied. “Are you sure of what you are saying? Adesuwa cannot oppress her younger sister that she cares so much for,” replied Michael.

“Oh! So I am now a liar? I knew you would always support daddy’s girl. Nonsense!” she said and walked out on Michael.

Adesuwa and Adelola prepared for school without talking to each other. Michael noticed them and kept quiet until he drove them to school. He asked them what the problem was and they told him the truth. From what they told him, he knew that Adelola was wrong but he counseled them without sentiments.

“My angels, I don’t want you to ever fight over anything again. You should always see yourselves as one; so the issue of who takes the soap first should not bring any problem. When one person is through, let her wait for the other. Or do you want me to be buying things different for you?”

The Conference

“No daddy!” They answered in chorus. “Good! Now apologize to yourselves,” he instructed and they did.

While the conference lasted, Michael called his family members often to know how they were fairing in his absence. The only problem with his calls was that he spent more time in talking to Adesuwa than any other member of his family.

This singular act happened so often that Adelola began to feel bad about it. At times, when Michael would want talk with Adelola after speaking with Adesuwa, Adelola would refuse to collect the phone from Adesuwa. Of course Etomi was mad at what was happening.

Stepsisters

One night, Adelola went to Etomi’s room wearing a terrible look. “Mum, why does daddy love Adesuwa more than me? Upon everything I do to impress him,” Adelola asked Etomi brokenhearted.

“My daughter, the truth is that there. are some things I have been waiting for the right time to tell you and maybe this is the right time.” Etomi told her sobbing daughter. She went and brought the photocopies of the will and showed it to Adelola.

“What is this?” Adelola asked confused as she flipped through the papers. “That is your father’s will. Go through it thoroughly and you will know the position of you, your brother and I in this family,’ she said. Adelola carefully went through the will and tears dripped her eyes.

Etomi’s Advise

“My daughter, I never wanted to tell you this but I have to before it becomes too late. Adesuwa is not your blood sister as you had thought. She is your step sister!”. “What? Adesuwa is my step sister? This is unbelievable!” she exclaimed.

“I know it will be difficult for you to believe it but that is the truth. Her mother left immediately after her delivery and your father married me to take care of her. I had to tell you this because if you do not fight for your right now, you may end up a slave in your own father’s house,” Etomi advised.

Adelola’s Attitude

Adelola became distraught, she loved Adesuwa very much and could not imagine having any problem with her. Yet, she needed to fight for her right according to her mother. From then, her attitude towards Adesuwa started changing gradually. Adesuwa noticed it but she could not figure out what was amiss.

One day, a young man saw Adelola along the street and fell in love with her at first sight. He stopped her to talk to her but Adelola refused to give him attention. Because men used to disturb her a lot, she did not even care to look at the person coming after her.

Charles Meets Adesuwa

She kept on moving and even though the man followed her home, she never looked back to behold the man’s face. Immediately she entered the house, she banged the door on him and the door smoothed the young man’s finger. The man felt really embarrassed.

Just then, Adesuwa came out and saw the handsome young man in pains as he blew his injured finger. “Excuse me, who are you and what are you doing here?” Adesuwa asked the young man.

He looked up and saw another beautiful girl standing in front of him.. He stopped blowing his hand immediately and tried to give an answer to the damsel before her. “, I am Charles by name. Actually, I was eemm” he stammered.

The Exposed Finger

Adesuwa looked at his finger and saw that it was exposed. “Your finger is exposed. Please, who are you and what happened to your finger?” Adesuwa asked again. Charles explained everything that happened to her, he told her the truth so Adesuwa rushed inside the house and brought a first aid box and cleaned the man’s finger. Charles was surprised.

He just watched the girl speechlessly as she gently dressed his wound. After dressing it, she said to him: “I am sorry about what happened but please, mind how you go after a girl. You might either put her in trouble or land yourself in trouble,” she counseled him wisely.

“In fact, I am speechless. I have never met your kind of person since I was born. Please, can I know you better?” Charles inquired. “See this man! Please, start going before my mum sees us here and misunderstand the whole thing. You just got exposed trying to know someone and you are not done yet,” she said mischievously.

Charles Later Got Married To Adesuwa

Charles did not want to disappoint her. So he gently left but before he left, he gave her his complimentary card and pleaded with her to give him a call anytime. Adesuwa collected the card and Charles left. Meanwhile, as they discussed, Adelola was watching them through the window.

It was then she saw who was coming after her. Charles was exceptionally handsome. He was a perfect gentleman that every girl in their neighbourhood admired. Not only that, he was also from a reputable wealthy family. Adelola had seen him one day and wished Charles would come for her some day.

Unluckily for Adelola, Charles later got married to Adesuwa. She missed the only man God sent her way due to pride. Many years had passed, no other man came for her hand in marriage. Adelola later became old and decided to travel back to the village to start a new life. These are the wages of sin.
