On Monday, federal court officials will formally charge individuals linked to the tragic attacks in Yelwata, Benue State.
On Sunday, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice made this information public in a statement they sent to journalists.
After what it called “a painstaking investigation and collaboration by government agencies,” the statement said that the accused would be taken before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
In order to convey a clear message to those who oppose Nigeria, regardless of their disguise, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice wants to reassure Nigerians that justice would be served in this issue.
In addition, the statement stated that “The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to the protection of the lives and property of all, as enshrined in the Constitution.” Mr. Kamarudeen Ogundele, a media adviser to the AGF, signed the statement.
The Yelwata massacre occurred in June 2025 in the Yelwata hamlet in Benue State’s Guma Local Government Area.
According to reports, the violence began in the late hours of June 13, 2025, and continued into the early hours of June 14, when a Catholic mission, a small market, and residential buildings were all targeted in coordinated attacks by suspected armed herders.
In the course of the attack, the perpetrators traded gunfire with security personnel, set fire to homes, and severely disfigured their victims. According to reports, over 3,000 people were displaced from their houses and over 100 individuals died.
A statement issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu denouncing the massacre and ordering the investigation and prosecution of those involved was issued earlier.
