N-Power Story: How a Once Mighty Empowerment Scheme Stumbled.

Once upon a time, there was something called the N-Power initiative that existed in Nigeria. The initiative was aimed at helping to end youth unemployment and driving social progress. It targeted university graduates and nongraduates from the ages of eighteen through thirty-five years and gave them a lifeline of two years of paid work based in respective homes.

From the very beginning, it seemed as if NPower was truly an incarnation of hope. Founders saw beneficiaries learning employability skills and envisioned a future where people would be elevated out of poverty by technology skills into productive careers.

Basically, it started by sending beneficiaries to a lot of parts in the country, like to schools, farm areas, and health centers.

While the N-Power journey, though launched at dawn, had its own share of victories and controversies, it had moved to the N-Power centres—for graduate and nongraduate—to learn digital skills: coding, hardware and software engineering, animation, Automobile, amongst others. Classrooms around buzzed with energy, hopes, dreams, and promises for better days ahead.

But what is an epic without some challenges? Funding issues meant that N-Power was faced with threats from different quarters. Many critics emerged who asked whether it really changed lives or just scratched the surface. Then came whispers—those things that tested the N-Power resilience.

It started innocently enough with the malfunctioning of the payment system. Longingly, one sweats over one’s stipend while these digital gears grind to a halt. Days sluggishly metamorphose into weeks, and frustration simmers. Rumors fly like wildfire: “N-Power missteps,” they say. “The once-mighty program falters.”.

Then, a new Administration came and suspended the Almighty N-Power programme due to corruption alligator labels against managers. And so, every activity regarding N-Power was stopped till this moment. It is now a shadow of itself.

Against all odds, Npower beneficiaries continue to hope and expect that N-Power should emerge from the shadows. The glitch was fixed, stipends flowed once more, and finally, the beneficiaries returned back to their duties. And just as the sun is about to set, so should N-Power Beneficiaries, in relation to Nigeria, understand that the really salient moments often forge anew.
