After nearly two years of quiet, the Nigeria Police Force has spoken out over whistleblower Nnamdi Emeh’s continued incarceration.
According to Gistcon, the 26-year-old man was taken into custody by the Nigeria Police Force after allegedly disclosing allegations of top officers engaging in extortion, extrajudicial murders, torture, and organ harvesting in Anambra State.
The Nigerian police have charged the man they arrested with gun possession, character assassination, money laundering, and the illegal transfer of N47 million.
Reports indicate that court officials signed his release warrant on May 15, 2024, but that certain police personnel allegedly hindered his freedom.
In a statement released on Saturday night by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, the police clarified that Emeh had not yet fulfilled the terms of his bail.
The police said that Emeh was taken into custody in accordance with the law because of credible accusations that were examined extensively and brought before an appropriate court of law.
Following the proper procedures, he was arraigned before the Federal High Court, Awka, after the charges against him were formally filed.
Judiciary functions autonomously, and the exclusive authority to assess evidence, set bail terms, and take additional appropriate measures in accordance with the law rests with the court.
The court set bail conditions for Mr. Emeh, and he was granted it. So, instead of going on a needless media frenzy, the suspect should take measures to satisfy such standards.
Justice, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law are priorities for the NPF, and the organization pledges to continue this work.
The Force is also cognizant of its responsibility to investigate claims made against any anyone, including its own officers, and to follow the proper legal channels to bring any suspect to justice.
“We implore the public to refrain from engaging in excessive speculation or interference while the judicial process proceeds in its entirety, especially since the case against Mr. Emeh is still pending in court,” he said.
