The quality of Nollywood films has declined significantly over the years, according to veteran actor Francis Odega of Nigeria.
According to Odega, who recently made the allegation in an episode of the podcast “Where Is The Lie,” Nollywood back in his day was superior to Nollywood now.
He went on to say that Nollywood used to produce great films when he and his peers were in power, but that these days the industry is largely responsible for forgettable fare.
We could make an iconic film with just one screenplay back then. Nowadays, though, it’s unacceptable that a single screenplay can result in seven subpar films. “The Nollywood of yesteryear was so much better than the Nollywood of today,” the actor remarked.
According to Odega, he was already working in the film industry before Nollywood even existed, making him a true trailblazer in the industry.
Nollywood was created by several people, including me. Nollywood was a new phenomena when we began. Before we changed our name to Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, we were known as the Nigerian Actors Guild, or NAG. The AGN, the Nigerian Guild.
Nollywood emerged afterwards. So, you might say I was an early proponent of Nollywood. His explanation was that he had been working in the film industry for 30 years.
