Funke Akindele cautions Kunle Afolayan, “Don’t mention my name

Producer and actress Funke Akindele and award-winning filmmaker Kunle Afolayan recently had an uncomfortable phone conversation, according to Afolayan. Following backlash over Afolayan’s comments about Nollywood marketing tactics, the two began talking.

Afolayan claimed in a Sunday interview with Arise News that Akindele personally contacted him following remarks he made that appeared to imply he had disapproved of coworkers who market their films using dance-driven advertisements.

“I know you don’t like me, so don’t mention my name in your interviews,” she yelled, and then she hung up,” Afolayan recounted.

He maintained that their connection is long-standing and professional, and that there is no animosity between them.

It seemed strange, and I wondered where it was coming from. I consider her a sister. I would stay at her hostel while I was at Unilag, and her sister is a friend of mine, so I don’t see where this is coming from,” Afolayan continued.
