Ogun State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Dapo Abiodun, has expressed his condolences to the people and government of Kano State following the tragic incident that broke out at Singa Market in Kano.
The fire allegedly wiped out over ₦5 billion in property value, impacted over 1,000 companies, and went missing with seven people.
On Sunday, Abiodun issued a statement in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, describing the tragedy as one of the worst disasters in the market’s history.
He expressed his deepest sympathies for the merchants who had suffered the devastating loss of their possessions and urged them to hold on to hope, promising that the government of Kano State will do all in its power to assist those in need.
The loss of equipment, merchandise, and other items, together with the demolition of four residential structures that housed small-scale companies, was a devastating blow to the lives of many people, according to him.
The governor of Ogun State further demanded that market officials and other appropriate local government officials take action to stop this from happening again.
His words were:
I extend my deepest sympathies to the government of Kano State and the merchants impacted by this tragic event on behalf of my colleagues in the Southern Governors’ Forum.
The devastation inflicted by this fire outbreak is immense, but I implore all impacted to have hope.
“The victims are being helped and the situation is being brought under control by the Kano State Government, which is headed by Abba Kabir Yusuf.”
