Voters in the Kuchaku polling unit in the Kuje Area Council reportedly panicked and the results couldn’t be tallied because tear gas was allegedly released just before the counting of ballots started on Saturday.
One voter said in an internet video that armed individuals associated with the All Progressives Congress (APC) broke into the polling place and stole electoral documents, including the sheet showing who had won the councillorship race.
According to the voter, the persons showed up while officials were tallying the results, unleashed tear gas and then removed the paper.
We were almost finishing up processing our results when APC arrived with armed personnel and took them. Based on what the voter mentioned in the video, it appears that they gassed everyone.
Also present at the location when the event happened were policemen from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Reportedly, once the tear gas was released, some voters ran away, which caused chaos and briefly stopped the counting.
