The revised BRT tariffs were announced by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) on Monday, February 23, 2026, after the fare rise.
The new fares were announced on Tuesday by LAMATA, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, and they will be in force starting Monday, March 2nd, 2026.
After hearing from regulated public transport operators who were worried about the increasing expense of operating their services, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu accepted the price hike decision.
As previously stated, the state government intends for the hike to alleviate the strain on public transport providers brought on by persistent economic difficulties. The evaluation is in accordance with the state’s previously authorised yearly fare review method, as mentioned in the document.
In a preliminary report, LAMATA stated that bus operating companies (BOCs) have persisted in facing rising operational expenses, such as salaries, spare parts, and vehicle upkeep.
According to the statement, operators are also investing in the purchase of modern, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient buses in order to maintain and improve service standards. This will boost passenger comfort and promote environmental sustainability.
